Happy National Costume Swap Day!
Well, it’s finally arrived, the day we’ve been dreaming about for all of a six weeks!
That’s when Corey came up with the brilliant (and not just her mom thinks so!) idea, to name Saturday, October 9, 2010 the first National Costume Swap Day.
Our trusty web guru Karissa, set up the pages and about three weeks ago, we launched. The idea was to inspire people to start swapping costumes in order to save money and keep single-use costumes from landfills. Our goal was to list 20 in-person swaps this year.
As of this morning, we have listings for more than 75 swaps in 23 states plus D.C. and Canada!
Talk about exceeding expectations!
Early on we brought KIWI magazine on board and a couple of weeks ago, Swap.com joined us.
The media coverage, online and off, has been astonishing, including this segment on Good Morning America last week!
Bright and early this morning both of us headed to local swaps. Lynn was at Small Threds in Issaquah WA where she snapped some happy shoppers.
Later today, Corey hopes to make it to some of the swaps at Whole Foods Markets around Seattle and up to Redmond to visit Holli Dunn’s swap. (When not running swaps, Holli is the photographer who shoots the awesome photos for Green Halloween and Celebrate Green! ).
Although the official day is today, plenty of swaps will be going on around the nation right up until Halloween.
And don’t forget online swapping sites-several of them have fun contests going on in addition to swapping. You can see them here.
So if you’d rather hold on to your money and keep your kids’ costumes out of the landfill, check out the National Costume Swap Day site and organize a swap or attend one! Most importantly, have fun!
By the way, if you get to a swap and take some great photos, please share them with us!
Lynn Colwell and Corey Colwell-Lipson are mother and daughter and authors of Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family, and founders of Green Halloween®.

Hello Corey and Lynn, thank you so much for sharing this special day with us. I enjoyed our swap and was asked to host more the next couple Saturdays. Just completed my interview with KIRO Radio and will let you know when that’s supposed to air
Jennifer, congrats on your amazing event!! We can’t wait to hear more, including on the KIRO radio interview! Thank you so much for you active, generous support. Warmly, Corey & Lynn
