Great DIY gift for travelin’ dads

My husband’s parents traveled a fair amount, but more interestingly, they befriended people  from most of the countries in the world–literally!

And in those days, when people traveled, they sent post cards. The result? When my mother-in-law passed away, I discovered a shoe box filled with post cards from countries around the globe, some of which no longer exist!

None of the other family members wanted what I considered a real treasure so I took home the box.

I knew I would use the postcards and their fascinating stamps in a craft of some sort, and last week, I pulled out the box, chose some cards and soaked off the stamps.

Then I found a canvas that had already been painted with a picture I no longer wanted and lightly sanded it.

I laid out the stamps in a more or less rainbow design, then spread Green Glue from EcoGreenCrafts.com thinned with a  little water and glued on the stamps.

Once everything was laid down, I painted on another layer of the glue over the top of the project to protect it.

Here’s what the final project looks like. It’s about 24″x12,”  looks awesome on our wall and is a great conversation starter:

If you wanted to make a stamp based project a dad for Father’s Day, you could decoupage the stamps to the front of a journal or other book. You could find an used table, tray, mirror or picture frame and do the same. If dad is really a hip dude, you could make a laptop skin by decoupaging the stamps to a thin piece of cardboard, then attaching to the laptop with removable glue dots.  How cool would that be?

This actually would make a great family craft for Father’s Day. You can buy stamps very inexpensively on Ebay or probably locally via Craigslist.

Actually, I’m not finished with my project. I’m looking for a piece of barely used acrylic (otherwise too may scratches), that I could  affix to the stretcher bars over the stamps so I could personalize the project with an apt quote.

Thinking about making a gift for Father’s Day using stamps? Tell us about it.
