Soup Swap success
In case you missed it, last Saturday was National Soup Swap Day. We’ve swapped clothing, household items and Halloween costumes, so we figured, why not soup?
Each of the guests was invited to bring six quarts of homemade soup in one quart jars, preferably frozen for easy transport.
Most of the swappers brought their soup in glass jars (the safest option because glass doesn’t leach chemicals into food as can happen with plastic). Lynn didn’t have quart jars on hand so she used a variety of “upcycled” glass food jars for her carrot ginger soup.
Each participant told the story around the soup she brought. Some were old family recipes like Tracy Anderson’s borscht. Others were newly downloaded from the internet like the recipe Corey followed for Armenian Red Lentil Soup. Either way, the stories were fun to hear and provided a way for us to get to know each other since some had just met.
Next, we tasted so we’d know which soups of the eight, we wanted to take home. (But we all agreed we’d be satisfied with any of them. They all tasted delish!)
We picked numbers for the order in which we would choose our soups, then the swapping began!
It was great to get the recipes for the soups too.
Once the trading was over, everybody left happy and we all agreed to make this an annual event!
You don’t need a national holiday to put on a food swap. Have you participated in a soup swap or similar event? Tell us about it.
