Go Green Get Fit Challenge wrap up

Twelve weeks ago I joined a bunch of other green bloggers for the Go Green Get Fit Challenge as part of the EcoMom Alliance Sustain YourSelf™ Program presented by PlanetShoes.com.

Unfortunately, the last few weeks of the challenge I was traveling which not only wreaked havoc with my “plans,” but also interfered with my living up to my pledge to post weekly about how I was doing.

We’ve reached the end of the twelve weeks though so I want to finish up with an honest admission of how it went for me.

Here’s what I said I wanted to aim for when we started:

My overall goal:

By the end of 12 weeks I will be at my first goal weight and BMI and once reaching it, will maintain until I’m ready to move on down. (My long term plan is to reach my final set point weight in two stages, maintaining at the first level for a few months, then once again losing until I reach the set point.)

Here’s my plan:
1. Stick with current healthy eating plan.
2. Minimum 1/2 hour walk six days a week (can be broken up into increments)
3. Do minimum of one other form of exercise each day for at least 15 minutes
4. Once a week do interval routine and slow weight training

Here’s what I actually did:

I missed my goal, to be at my first goal weight and BMI. I’m definitely closer to it than I was when I started but still not there. My excuse is too much traveling. I’m a creature of habit. When I establish great habits I have little trouble sticking to them. But when I’m traveling, even though my intention is to keep up, I simply don’t.

Actually I didn’t do badly with eating while traveling although I didn’t get nearly enough protein or veggies. Eating in people’s homes and going out for almost every meal makes it very challenging to get enough of the nutrients I need.

As for exercise, because of the way I do it throughout the day when I’m home, I just couldn’t manage that on vacation. Also had no access to weights. I could have used stretch bands which while they aren’t perfect, could have helped. But of course, I forgot to bring them. (And unfortunately, what I am doing in the picture above does not qualify as exercise though it sure was fun!)

Another issue with exercising was the heat. It was hot and humid, both of which I find extremely challenging whether walking, bike riding or doing anything else outside. So I didn’t do much.

If you check out my plan to get to my goal you can clearly see where I went wrong.

However, despite the fact I didn’t reach my goal weight, I really enjoyed participating in this challenge and would recommend trying one if you’re struggling with sticking with a weight-loss and exercise program. Having buddies, virtual or not, cheering you on and giving you ideas for how to reach your goals makes the road easier.

How did you do with your eating and exercise goals over the summer?
