Milk jug crafting, Part 2

by Lynn

Tuesday’s post showed some great examples of items made from plastic milk jugs.

Today, I’m sharing my own.

I like the look of “milky” plastic (if you’ll excuse the pun) and wanted to make some jewelry and I-didn’t-know-what-else from my 1/2 gallon jug.

First I cut apart the jug to see what pieces I could use:

After doing this I realized there was only one piece without a sticker on it that was long enough for me to cut into pieces for the earrings I had in mind. I trimmed that piece into approximately 1/2″ wide strips.

I cut two of the strips about 1/2″ shorter than the rest and using an ice pick made one hole at each end of four of the strips.

Next I lay one of the shorter cuts inside the longer one and folded them in half (as pictured above), then inserted a jump ring through all four holes.

I attached an earwire to the jump ring and after making a second one in the same manner, came out with a matched pair of earrings that I doubt anyone would trace back to the lowly milk carton.

I had lots of other ideas running around in my head, but all I had time for was a magnet that was put together in less than five minutes by cutting out one of the circles embedded in the jug, gluing on some words, adding a metal flower and a magnet on the back.

Have you made anything from a milk jug? Would love to see it.

This challenge hopefully will open your eyes to the number of items we still end up trashing every day that could be used by ourselves or our kids ot create fun and useful items.
