Decorate your tree—for free

by Lynn

Anyone can walk into the store and buy a box of ornaments. But how much more fun to personalize your tree by decorating with objects that are meaningful to you in some way.

A few years ago I discovered that by using a bit of wire, I can turn almost any everyday object into an ornament.

Below are some examples. The first one uses a spoon I brought back from a visit to Norway, and demonstrates the basic wire wrap and loop. I prefer light weight wire that I can easily wrap without a tool. You also can use string or ribbon.

This next set of photos shows a small number of objects I’ve turned into ornaments.

1. Rubber ring, part of a game. I attached a bell with wire before making the loop

2. A painted acorn

3. An earring

4. A small wood turning with a microphone wind screen hat

5. Foam letters from an alphabet set

6. Two slit playing cards fit into each other with a hole punched for the wire

And here are some other objects to consider:

  • Silver baby cup
  • Photos in small frames
  • Cookie cutters
  • Baby shoes
  • Mittens
  • Hair ribbons and clips
  • Items from nature like small sticks, pretty stones
  • Buttons
  • Small toys

Finally, here’s how to turn your ornament hunt into a little family adventure:

Would love to see your everyday objects turned ornaments.
