How to grow “living grass” for an Easter basket

Thank you so much for your comments and feedback to Finley’s post on being excited to find real grass in her Easter basket, rather than the plastic stuff. For those of you who inquired about how the Easter Bunny might have pulled off this eco-trick, here is how it’s done:

Two - three weeks before Easter:

1. Place a shallow dish (approximately the same width as the basket) in the bottom of the basket or line with plastic wrap. Be sure there are a few holes in the dish/wrap for drainage.

2. Fill with potting soil (organic, if possible)

3. Sprinkle (organic) grass seeds on top. Or, for edible grass, consider sprouting wheat.

4. Place basket on sunny windowsill

5. Water daily

Of course, if you’ve run out of time, you can always place real, cut grass in the basket as well.

After Easter, compost grass, or, if you’ve grown wheat grass, enjoy in a post-holiday juice or smoothie!
