Battle of the organic baby gowns

by Lynn with her daughter-in-law, Sam

We’re passionate about supporting mom-owned green businesses and the first time we “met” Erin, owner of Lullaby Organics, we fell in love with both she and her company which offers great green items for kids.

Erin also is one of the most creative greenies we know, always coming up with innovative ideas to spread the word about not only about her own products, but about others committed to healthy living.

Her latest brainstorm is Lullaby Organics 12 Days of Holi-Daily Deals and we were thrilled to be invited to participate! Starting on November 25th and ending on December 6th, Erin offers a deal of the day with big discounts on awesome products.

Find out which bloggers are revealing the Deal of the Day by following Lullaby Organics on Facebook or visit the website.

Lullaby Organics Holi-Daily Deal for today, November 30 is: 30-60% off all baby gowns, sleep sacks, footless rompers, hats and onesies. WOW!

In honor of this event, Erin sent two adorable gowns for my daughter-in-law to compare and check out on our new grandgirl.

But before she fills you in, I just wanted to point out why buying organic clothing and bedding for baby is so important.

More and more infants these days are reacting to their environments by developing rashes and other problems that honestly I never saw when our kids were young.

In attempting to find the reason, moms have discovered facts like this one about cotton from which most baby clothing and bedding is made: Cotton is considered the world’s “dirtiest” crop due to the heavy use of insecticides which are the most hazardous pesticides to animal and human health.

When we are swaddling babies in cotton, we’re literally wrapping them in chemicals.

In many cases (including that of the founder of Under The Nile mentioned below as well as Erin), moms saw their children developing health issues and went in search of answers. What they discovered about items like conventional cotton clothing and bedding turned them into entrepreneurs, inspired to help not only their own children, but as many others as possible.

The Battle! (By Sam)

First of all I want to say that Lynn got carried away in the title of this post.

The fact is, I loved both gowns. The organic cotton knits are incredibly soft. They’re both made for infants 0-3 months, but as with all clothing, there is some difference in the “fit,” and also in the weight of the fabric. Both have hand covers which are essential as babies do tend to scratch themselves.

Of course both gowns open at the bottom making diaper changes a lot easier than if the baby has any type of pants on. (Note from Lynn: I love the fact that there is elastic at the hem of each gown. When our children were babies, there was not and gowns were not my favorite because the babies got so tangled up in them.)

Both appear well made with snaps that work as they should

A few thoughts about the differences:

Gown number 1 is from Kate Quinn Organics. (Butting in here again for a moment (this is Lynn), we’re big fans of this company not only because it’s local to our area, but also because Kate Quinn was one of the first brands to bring out anything other than cream colored organic cotton baby clothes in the U.S.)

First of all, love the print. It’s modern and interesting without overwhelming baby’s face.

This gown is lighter weight than the other. By itself, it’s not warm enough for our Colorado winters unless I put a woolie underneath. But for spring and summer babies, or if you’re lucky enough to live in a warmer climate, perfect.

I like the way this sleeper fits. There’s enough room for the baby, but she’s not swimming in it. (She’s about 9.5 pounds right now.)

Gown #2 comes from Under the Nile. Under the Nile products have been around since 1998. Their quality is well-known by moms who care about having only the finest fabrics surround their newborns.

This pink printed gown and hat are heavier than the Kate Quinn.

And to top it off (pun intended), the hat is lined so it’s doubly cozy and really does keep the heat in much better than ordinary cotton caps.

The print is cute without being “cutesy,” and the lining of the hat is a matching pink.

What’s extra neat about this gown is that it converts into a romper with two legs just by adjusting the snaps. Very clever.

If your baby likes to kick a lot and you think she’s constrained by the gown, in an instant, you can free her legs.

I have absolutely no complaints about either gown.

Either, or better yet both, would make wonderful gifts for a new mom.
