Green Gifts for Girlie Girls!

by Lynn and Corey

Birthdays, graduations and holidays often call for gifts - so what to give your green (girlie) girl? Shades of pink, frilly skirts and fairies will surely please, but how to choose gifts with our girlfriend, Earth, in mind?

Here are a few of our favorite picks:

Baby

Okay so she’s too young to care about the color, but how sweet are shades of pink set against baby’s rosebud cheeks? Organic Quilt Company‘s heirloom quality, handcrafted quilts are made from coo-worthy, organic fabrics.

Save green: Know how to sew? Craft a quilt for girlie wee-one from vintage or sustainably grown fabrics or even old baby clothes (if they are your old baby clothes, you’ve just added some meaning to the greening!).

School-age

Butterfly Girl whimsical dolls and books (including e-books), connect girls to nature and inspire them to explore the magic of the world around them. We love the whole line, the message within the book’s pages and the company’s commitment to sustainable, ethical practices. We also give two wings up, way up, for the company’s transparency about the types/origins of materials they use.

Save green: As with the quilt (above) if you’re feeling crafty, try making a doll. Check out Magic Cabin’s doll kits, or experiment with making a flannel rag doll.

Tween

Girlie girls may love lotions and potions, but what’s in all that stuff anyway? (Trust us, it isn’t pretty.) So adults in the know give girls girlie stuff that’s safe for their bodies and for the planet. We love Good for your Girls, a line of skincare without the scare.

Save green: You can also make your own soon-to-be-texted-about body products, or provide girlie tween with the ingredients to make her own uber cool concoctions. Here’s a great list of safe, simple recipes for the head-to-toe spa experience.

Teen

Style, function, statement and sustainability. Your tree-hugging teen will love the upcycled leather hip bag from Happy Cow. Made from excess leather from furniture manufacturing. Bags come in a variety of styles for your green girl (or guy).

Save green: Happy Cow bags have a vintage flair. Before buying new, hit up a few thrift shops and see what treasure you can find, even if it’s not an exact match.

Girls at heart

Foodies and fashionistas will flip for these necklaces made from fruits (and veggies). Find one for your favorite female at Uncommon Goods.

Save green: If you are DIY-er, you can make your own version of the above necklace. Heck, if you also happen to be a gardener, number one, your rock! But number two, you can make jewelry from your own, homegrown “beads.”
