Fair Trade favorites (chocolate)
As I mentioned yesterday, there are many reasons to buy Fair Trade and happily, when it comes to edibles, (especially chocolate), there are lots of great choices.
Just a few of our favorites:
1. Coco-Zen. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift or party favors for the chocolate-loving crowd, Coco-Zen’s handmade truffles will satisfy any cravings. New mom and admitted chocoholic, Joyce Kushner left corporate America to start Coco-Zen after her chocolates won rave reviews from family and friends. Ever since, this small company has combined the best in Fair Trade and organic ingredients with a commitment to sustainability in all aspects of the business, a combination that wins us over as much as the delightful taste of each perfect Coco-Zen treat.
2. Endangered Species. This year we welcomed Endangered Species as a Green Halloween® sponsor. But even if they weren’t, they’d make this list as a Fair Trade favorite. That’s because not only are their chocolates among the best tasting we’ve ever had, but the company was founded with the purpose of raising awareness and making an impact on the growing number of plant and animal species disappearing from the Earth. Ten percent of net profits are donated to fund species and habitat conservation efforts.
3. Equal Exchange. When we talk chocolate, we don’t limit ourselves to bars and such, especially this time of year. While Equal Exchange’s candy is top notch, we love to kick back by the fire and enjoy their hot chocolate which comes in several varieties including Organic Spicy Hot Cocoa made with cinnamon and a kick of cayenne.
4. Sjaaks. This family owned business is always innovating new treats to delight the most astute chocolate lover. Jacques, creator of Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates, brought his talents as a confectioner over from Holland, his homeland. His extensive knowledge of confections and his flare for creativity shines through in Sjaaks offerings like their new Eli’s Earth Bars which became an instant hit with me when I was lucky enough to score some free samples! (Sjaaks is another Green Halloween sponsor this year.)
5. Kopali. A company making wonderful chocolate covered fruits and espresso beans, grown and produced sustainably in small batches for exceptional quality and flavor. No sugar, no sulfites, no oil—absolutely nothing added. Kopali is dedicated not only to bringing healthier food to the consumer, but to “to connect heroic organic banana farmers, our neighbors at Punta Mona, with the growing market of shoppers who care where their food comes from.” That would be us!
