Celebrate Green! and the stimulus package-forever united in history (sort of-at least in our minds)
by Lynn
Tuesday, February 17, 2008 is an historic day. President Obama will sign into law, a stimulus package meant to jolt the nation’s economy toward prosperity.
It certainly jolted us to learn that our son’s office chair, desk (and Celebrate Green!), will play a role in this momentous occasion.
The story: Last night, we were having a perfectly normal phone conversation with our son (Corey’s brother), Chip. (the curator of anthropology at Denver’s Museum of Nature and Science.)
The conversation:
Dad: So Chip, what do you think about the stimulus package.
Chip: Blah, blah, blah….. Oh, by the way, did you know President Obama is signing the stimulus bill in Denver on Tuesday?
Mom (Lynn): Yup.
Chip: Did you know he’s signing it at the museum?
Dad: You’re kidding!
Chip: Well, guess who was in my office all day Friday.
Mom: No idea.
Chip: The Secret Service.
Mom: In your office? Why?
Chip: Because the president is using my office as the green room before he signs the bill. He’ll be meeting and greeting there.
THUMP!
That’s mom falling off her chair.
Mom: You have got to be kidding! President Obama is going to be sitting in your office, in your chair, behind your desk?
Chip: Yes.
Of course, being a good son, Chip keeps a copy of Celebrate Green! on his desk at all times and will be leaving one out for his special guest. (If I’ve told him once, I’ve told him a million times, “You never know when the president might drop in.”)
And so, Celebrate Green!, president Obama, and the stimulus bill will be inextricably linked, in our minds at least, forever and ever.
And who knows? Maybe after reading our book, President Obama will sign a new bill declaring that all celebrations should - from this day forward - be green. Or maybe he’ll declare February 17 “Celebrate Green Day.” Or maybe he’ll just be inspired to do away with wrapping paper and, instead, will wrap his gifts in leftover campaign posters. Whatever he does with it, we know our book is in the right hands.
… now let’s just hope he’s inspired to pick it up.
News flash:
Just received the following note from Chip:
“There has been a slight change in plans. My office will now be the ‘holding pen’ for Vice President Biden, while my boss’s office will be used for the President.”
OK, so it’s not Obama sitting in the chair, but it’s awfully close and still something to celebrate!

That is funny! Joe Biden’s not so bad?! Maybe Chip can pass a copy of the book onto Obama (the secret service no doubt) to give to Michelle?
What an amazing story!!! Go Chip Go!!! May it stimulate Celebrate Green!!!
I just sent Corey the books and forgot to note that I named a character Barack in our First Grade book, of course in his honor, but back in 2006!
