A Mother’s Day gift with meaning

Mother’s Day is coming. Hooray! We happen to love this holiday. After all, we are a mother-daughter team!

But we also love the idea of an occasion to celebrate Mother Earth as well as other mothers around the world.

One of the best ways to do that is to request that as a gift, a contribution be made in your name or the name of your mom, to an organization that is doing great things. There are so many worthy causes out there, but as a way to encourage you to consider a gift to others as a tribute to you this Mother’s Day, we’ll be highlighting some as we move toward May 9th.

We’d like to start off with Yurt Cozy.

A gift to this organization can help a woman like Sosor in Mongolia.

Sosor is a grandmother who takes care of her two grandsons while they attend the local high school. She is retired and spends the her time leading the local elders union in her community.

She first found out about energy efficient products at a local community event. She hopes to purchase an insulated yurt blanket and energy efficient stove to benefit the environment and to help her save fuel.

Your gift helps her family save money, reduce pollution, and keep warm.

According to the Yurt Cozy website, when you purchase a Yurt Cozy carbon credit, the funding is used in four ways:

  • Training staff at a microfinance field partner in clean energy technologies, enabling them to develop energy-specific loan products with the right interest rates and loan terms that are affordable to microentrepreneurs.
  • Educating local businesses and households about the clean energy alternatives, and the availability of finance that makes them affordable
  • Supporting local businesses and technicians who install the energy systems and keep them working long into the future
  • Reducing the interest or principal costs, reducing the overall cost of the system to the microentrepreneur.

So instead of buying flowers to show your love for mom, this year, how about supporting moms half way around the world as they work to help their families, their communities and Mother Earth.

What do you think of the idea of asking for support for this organization or another on Mother’s Day in addition to or instead of a tangible gift?
