Buying a TV? Consider an LED
If you happen to be in the market for a TV, and like Lynn haven’t bought a new one since the Clinton administration, you, like Lynn, also probably have no idea that they now make LED TV’s.
LED televisions are significantly more power efficient than plasma TVs, and eliminate the use of mercury in the backlighting. The cost of LEDs make going green a little more challenging. But you can find eco-friendly LEDs at many price points by looking for deals on name brand models. Check reviews for most makes, models and features online.
For example, Philips has a range of LED TVs available at Costco nationwide from $599.99 to $1,199.99. These models are also packed with power-saving features, such as features to dim the backlight depending on program material along with the lighting space. There’s even a feature to lessen the ideal brightness to conserve all the more power, exceeding Energy Star standards.
Thanks to the team at Philips for offering these tips on ways to make your TV experience a bit more eco-friendly:
1. Turn on the power-saver mode to cut down on power consumption.
2. Control room lighting by dimming the lights. And consider blackout shades that not only set the TV mood, but offer thermal benefits like keeping heat in during the winter.
3. Never let the TV serve as background noise. Shut it off when not in use.
4. Don’t chuck your old model. Instead, donate, re-purpose or recycle. Check Phillips as well as Earth911 for recycling opportunities.
Note: We received no renumeration for including Phillips in this post. They simply provided the information as noted above.
