Celebrate Green Blog

St. Patrick’s Day is here and it’s all about the green so we’ve got some tips on how you can celebrate like a leprechaun while still showing your mother (Earth) some respect.

Drink green. Beer is the drink de jour so make it green by choosing organic (or, if you’re adventurous, brewing your own!). But don’t toast your mates in disposable plastic cups; hit up thrift stores for reusable mugs or use compostable cups instead.

For a non-alcoholic treat, how about making a green smoothie:

Into a blender add equal portions of fresh or frozen grapefruit, cucumber, pineapple,1/2 bunch cilantro, a little lime, cinnamon, a dash of vanilla extract and a little agave. If the ingredients are fresh, add ice. Blend and enjoy!

Wear green. There’s no reason to get pinched but keep in mind that conventionally grown cotton is one of the most highly sprayed crops. That’s bad for the planet and farm workers, too. Instead, choose organic cotton or hemp or better yet, how about donning vintage threads? Searching E-bay, thrift shops and friend’s closets are likely to reveal Irish-approved treasures. If you just can’t find that perfect leprechaun outfit? Rent and return. Or use an old white t-shirt and dye green with the water from boil spinach leaves!

Celebrate green:

• Turn food and drink green with kale or organic food coloring.
• Light the night green with petroleum-free and naturally sweet smelling green beeswax candles .
• Shop at thrift stores or online for gently used St. Patty’s Day décor. If you can’t find what you’re looking for use some green paint and items you already have around the house.
• Send friends free St. Patty’s Day e-cards.

Support green. Do an Internet search for environmental and social justice organizations in Ireland and learn more about what’s going on there. If you’re so inclined, make a contribution of funds or supplies to the organization or write a letter of appreciation.
