Be a Halloween do-gooder
Yes, Halloween is about fun, but that doesn’t mean it can’t also be about helping out others. One great way to do that is by providing your child an extra bag in which to collect cell phones, then turning those phones in to companies that use them to raise money for great causes.According to www.Gizmodo.com, approximately 425,000 cell phones are tossed every day. Now that’s scary! (If you want to use this as an opportunity to teach your kids, share with them the photos of Chris Jordan who depicts what hundreds of thousands of any one item looks like.)
If you’re taking your children around your neighborhood, it will be helpful to call ahead or post a message on a community bulletin board announcing that your children will be collecting the phones to donate. Or maybe you can suggest the idea to your school and see which classroom can collect the most.
Once you’re collected the phones, then what?
Many communities have e-cyclers who will take the phones back and recycle them. Many phone companies do this as well.
But if you want to make a difference, then check out Cell Phones for Soldiers or Recycling for Charities. The former collects phones, sells them to recyclers, then
Proceeds buy calling cards for U.S. soldiers abroad to call their families—27 million minutes have been provided so far.
Recycling for Charities allows you to choose which non-profit you’d like the money from your cell donations to go to.
So this Halloween, encourage your kids (and help them) to do something truly boo-ti-ful to help others and the Earth.
