World Water Day, make every drop count
In the developed world, we take clean water for granted and may not even be aware of the world water crisis. There is one.
According to www.water.org:
- 884 million people, lack access to safe water supplies, approximately one in eight people.
- Each year, 3.575 million people die from water-related disease.
- 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation, including 1.2 billion people who have no facilities at all.
-
Every 15 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease.
-
Millions of women and children spend several hours a day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources.
- At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from a water-related disease.
And while in the U.S., we generally are fortunate in our ability to provide decent water to our citizens, we need to do much more to prevent pollution of our lakes, streams and adjoining oceans.
Take a moment today or in the next week to learn more about this issue and find a way to help, locally and globally. Here are just a few resources:

And while you’re at it, why make this the day you swear off bottled water and like we’ve done at Celebrate Green!, make the “take back the tap pledge.”
