5 ways to say “I love you” with a Valentine breakfast

by Lynn and Corey

We’ve always been a lover of hearts in any form and nothing says “love” more than combining hearts with a made-for-you special breakfast on Valentine’s Day. Here are some fun heart shaped wake-up ideas you might want to try this February 14th. (Be sure to use local, organic ingredients when available.)

1. From Anna at the Red, directions on how to make the most adorable heart-shaped hard boiled eggs. It’s very simple and we’re sure kids would love to do this as a surprise for mom or dad.

2. When I (Lynn), first saw the pictures of these small hearts, I thought they were a French toast version, but no! These are a form of an omelet. The video instructions are very clear and while these take a bit of time, they are surprisingly easy (at least as shown), to make. My only issue is that in the video, they are cooked in a coated (Teflon) wok. Making them in an uncoated pan (like cast iron or stainless steel), will make for healthier Valentines!

3. Speaking of French toast, if your Valentine loves it, why not cut it into hearts with a cookie cutter like this Almond French Toast Hearts recipe from Taste of Home.

4. Another use for a heart-shaped cookie cutter is to make a Valentine’s version of our family favorite, “egg-in-a-basket.” Instead of cutting out a circular hole in the center for the egg, just substitute the cookie cutter with a heart shaped on. The recipe couldn’t be simpler: Add butter or your preference of oil to a pan until bubbly. Cut heart from piece of bread using cookie cutter. Put bread in pan and leave on one side for a minute or two, then flip over and drop in egg. Cook until egg and toast reach desired “doneness.”

5. Is your love a pancake lover? It’s easy to make them in a heart shape just by slowly pouring the batter into the pan. Don’t do the whole thing at once. Take your time and make sure the pan is hot enough so that the pancakes starts to cook as soon as it hits the pan. These usually turn out a bit more free-form. It’s you’re the perfectionistic type, you also can use a large heart-shape cookie cutter to form a perfect Valentine, but you need to hold the cutter tight to the pan with a oven mitt so that the pancake mix doesn’t seep underneath as you pour it in.
