Fresh Celebrate Green News April 29, 2009

Green bits

We're hard at work generating sponsor interest for this year's Green Halloween. Check out this page to see last year's sponsors. Then, if you have any ideas of companies that would be a good match, let us know. There are some exciting changes and partnerships on the horizon and this concept is going to generate more enthusiasm than ever around the U.S. come October.

We were featured this week in the newsletter from www.StyleSubstanceSoul.com One of the best reasons to stop by this site is to sign up for their daily reminder to donate with one click to five different worthy non-profits. Think of it, spend three minutes a day giving without doing a thing but clicking your mouse.

Journalists and bloggers are taking advantage of the great content we offer monthly (see samples here), by using some or all of it in their blogs. One of the most consistent is Robin Shreeves who, in addition to her own blog, pens great posts for Mother Nature Network. If you're looking for blog content and interested in receiving the monthly content e-mails, just let us know.

Watch and comment on our appearance on Seattle TV

Last week our stint on NPR was a highlight (it's not too late to comment if you haven't already done so), and today, we were on four times on Seattle's KING 5 and KONG 6 TV (yup, those are really the names of the stations owned by the same company).

We shot the segments a couple of weeks ago with the irrepressible Tim Robinson, who really made the shoot a pleasure. You can view the segments here and of course, we'd sure appreciate it if you'd comment. Unfortunately, you have to sign up to comment and we know a lot of people don't like to do that, but you also could email Tim directly.

Encouraging small steps

One of the points we make very strongly in Celebrate Green! is that small steps are not only good, but vital on the road to change. While we all wish the changes we want would happen overnight, in general, human beings take time to get fully on board with new ideas.

That's why we don't try to force anyone to fully embrace every aspect of celebrating green at one time. We know they'll be overwhelmed and probably do nothing. Instead, we encourage them to take small steps. And we believe it's important to support people and companies who are moving toward sustainability, regardless of their motivation for doing so.

We'd like to encourage you to do the same. Next time you're in your local supermarket, let the manager know you appreciate seeing local fruit and veggies or packaged organic choices on the shelves. (Of course, walking into his office with a bag full of these items will help reinforce your point.)

If you see a product from a large company that is packed in recyclable material instead of plastic, or where the company is giving a portion of the proceeds to a charity, shoot the company an email and say thanks, even if it's obvious that they are not doing everything sustainably.

The impact of these small acknowledgments goes far beyond the time it takes to make them.
