Finding Forest Fairies: A Fabulous (free) Activity for Autumn Celebrations

by Corey

When the days get shorter and the grey sets in, setting out for a walk in the crisp air, amongst the fallen leaves can be medicine for the soul.

Autumn also happens to be the perfect time of year to find fairies.

Fairies are fond of transitions. They love spring and fall, dusk and dawn, shorelines and river-edges. They’re also drawn to plants and trees and stillness.

They do not appreciate being seen, but if you are patient and observant, you may find evidence of their existence.

Having the necessary fairy-finding gear can make the outing more successful: pencils and paper, a magnifying glass, a camera, a small container (or two). A fairy-finding-furry-friend may (or may not!) be of help.

Still, plenty of fairy finding goes on with nothing but a keen eye and an open heart.

Who knows? This may just become your new fall family tradition.

This fort may have been made by Forest Gnomes in the summertime. The girls wonder if fairies might have moved in too.

This tiny mushroom, encircled in a bed of soft moss, is most likely used as a tea-party table by fairy children.

Taking note of the “proof”

Finley found some “fairy dust” and collected it in a glass jar to take home.

No actual fairies found, but there’s lots of hope for next time!

Be it for a birthday party, a Harvest celebration or simply because, inviting children to set out on this magical journey may uncover more than “just” a good time.

What no-cost, nature-focused, seasonal fun does your family have this time of year?
