Craft a clutch

by Lynn

I probably wouldn’t qualify as a purse-aholic, but I do own far more than I’ll ever use. I didn’t buy most of them. Other than my everyday workhorse, for the most part they’ve been gifts or I’ve inherited them. But I do like making purses for gifts, though I’ve never made a clutch. So when I started thinking about doing that for the upcoming holidays, I decided to look for some inspiration. And boy, did I find it!

This adorable clutch is made from a CD case and couldn’t be simpler to make. Try to use recycled materials like the velvet lining, if you can. It’s from Craftzine.

You’ve no doubt seen clutches and purses made from wrappers. The instructions on the Candy Wrapper Purse blog are the clearest I’ve seen. Even though this is a purse with a strap, by putting the strap inside, it converts to a clutch so I say go for it!

I’m mad for this design from Noodlehead, for a gathered clutch. Use an old skirt or other pre-owned fabric (and zipper) or 100% organic cotton from Monaluna and to create the perfect little eco-accessory.

Prefer a less ladylike vibe? A denim clutch will be right up your alley. This one from Taylor & Demolish, is just one style I came across. What a great way to use up old jeans. Christmas isn’t that far off!

If you’re into felting, this pattern from Knit Picks, for a felted purse with flower, might be one you’d like to try. Although it includes the knitting pattern, you won’t need that if you make the clutch from an old sweater you felt yourself.

I’m mad for this idea from Recycled Memories on Etsy. She took a table runner and embroidered with beads over the existing pattern, then turned it into a clutch. I have so many beads from necklaces and other “vintage” jewelry I’ve collected. Brilliant way to use up some of them.

Like the idea above but prefer a more flamboyant style? The ever-popular out-on-a-limb Kathy Cano-Murillo shows how to make this attention-grabber on Cool-to-Craft. Note to greenies: choose a pre-used clutch, eco-friendly glue and paints and as above, take “jewels” from costume jewelry in your stash.

Inspired by these great examples, I can guarantee I’ll be make a clutch as soon as I can get to my sewing machine which is currently barricaded behind my daughter’s family’s stuff as she’s living in our guest room during her home remodel!

Have you made a clutch that might inspire me? Don’t be shy, let’s see it!
