Great ideas for a green Hanukkah
Being as we’re people who love to celebrate, it really doesn’t matter what holiday is coming along, we’re totally into making it greener. Whether religious, ethnic or made-up, a celebration is a happy event that brings people together. What’s not to love?
Being as there are now so many sustainably made decor and gifts items for most holidays, we thought we’d check out what’s available for Hanukkah. Happily, it wasn’t difficult to find creative items for every aspect of this celebration.
Whether you buy or use these for inspiration, know that your upcoming holiday definitely can be eco-friendly.
1. Dreidel and gelt made from eco-felt (from recycled bottles). Two of the coins even show the chocolate that’s inside the real gold foil coins children often receive. From Mama Made.
2. Not to be ignored, this galvanized steel menorah is imposing, modern and memorable. If we were going to have a menorah, this would be it for me! It’s from Three Steps Ahead.
3. Reusable bags are the best for any occasion and Hanukkah gift giving is no different. This one, from T and C Fine Goods, would make the perfect wrap for a bottle of wine.
4. I think this simple table cloth and napkins are beautiful. The pattern is fun, yet not over-the-top and of course, using cloth napkins and table cloths is one easy step to green. We’d prefer these items to be made from organic cotton, but if they become family heirlooms, you may think it’s worth purchasing less sustainable polyester. (Or not.) This set comes from www.Domestications.com.
5. If you have a small menorah, we highly recommend these beeswax candles from Big Dipper Wax Works. They burn cleaner than other types of candle and the honey aroma is heavenly.
6. For the celebrant with a sense of humor, a Hanukkah gift to love, this “M-m-m latkes” 100% organic cotton retro shirt from Rotem Gear. Love the retro vibe. The shirt just brings on smiles.
