Celebrate Green on Diwali by making a paper garland or necklace
In some parts of India, it is customary to wear a flower garland or hang them in your home during Diwali. Assuming you do not have access to fresh, organic flowers, why not use recycled paper to make them.
Supplies:
- Colored paper of any kind, even old magazines.
- An awl or other sharp pointed tool to make a hole in the center of each flower.
- String
Directions
- Make individual flowers by either of these two methods:
- If you are using tissue paper, cut about eight circles. Stack them on top of each other. Hold with your finger in the middle and pull up each of the individual pieces of paper around the center making a flower or
- Cut a flower shape by hand or more quickly using a punch.
- Once you have enough flowers to circle your neck or drape like a crepe paper streamer across a doorway, punch a hole through the center of each flower with the awl.
- String flowers and the the string ends together for a necklace or tie a knot at each end for a hanging garland.
If you'd prefer a something a little fancier, try making these complex and interesting flowers that look much more difficult to make than they are and when strung into a garland create a spectacular decoration. For Diwali, you'll probably want to use solid color papers or those with Indian prints.
