Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a holiday that celebrates family, community and culture. African American families (as well as those of African heritage around the world), gather to enjoy each other's company, engage in joint projects, discuss the seven principles and exchange gifts. The festivities take place over the course of one week, December 26-January 1.

As with any holiday or celebration, turning it green is a matter of thinking about all its aspects and how you can enhance them with people- and earth-friendly actions.

In our book, Celebrate Green!, we offer an engaging and meaningful Kwanzaa activity, making dolls that can then be donated to children in Africa who have no playthings through the Uthando Project. The project as explained in the book, gives a great example of how you can apply people and earth-friendly principles to your projects.

But if you don't know much about Kwanzaa, the first step is to learn, so why not check out some of these books on the topic. Then come back here and tell us how you and your family integrate eco-actions into your celebration.

If you're interested in learning more about Kwanzaa, teaching your children about the holiday or seeking ideas for activities, you might want to check out some of these books from your local library and before you go, learn a bit more about the holiday and plan some games or activities.
